Proposition 215
Since the 1930’s, marijuana had been illegal for citizens of the United States to use. All of that changed on one historic day in November of 1996 when, with a 56% majority vote, California passed Proposition 215. Dennis Peron (longtime fighter for legal pot and candidate for the Republican nomination for governor of California) was the major proponent behind Proposition 215. Although it took a long time to spread around the day is here where you can easily get your medical cannabis card to relieve you of your health issues.
Prop 215 has lead to an era of relaxed feelings regarding marijuana in California, but the use of marijuana by medical patience is still highly regulated. Proposition 215 was passed with the intention to allow ill patients the right to smoke marijuana. In order to be protected from the law under Prop 215, a doctor must recommend the use of marijuana to treat a physical ailment. Such diseases and illnesses that are often treated with marijuana are glaucoma, muscle spasms, spinal cord injuries, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and a long list of other conditions.
Marijuana may also be used in conjunction with treatment for AIDs and cancer because cannabis has the ability to reduce nausea and increase appetite, even in small doses. The number of medicinal uses of marijuana is astounding, and one of the primary reasons Prop 215 was passed.
Unfortunately marijuana is still viewed as a schedule one drug in the eyes of the Federal Government but steps have been taken to make that VERY false accusation overturned. You can help by writing to your elected officials and participating in such activities found at http://www.canorml.org and the upcoming Assembly Bill 390.
In my opinion all states should learn from Proposition 215 policy of California and legalize marijuana as soon as possible, or in any case allow medical marijuana to be sold and used by patients, with some rules. medical marijuana can provide relief to patients suffering from disease like AIDS and Cancer.
